Dr Harihar Dev Panta 'Father of microfinance of Nepal' passes away


Dr Harihar Dev Panta, who is known as the ‘father of microfinance in Nepal,’ passed away at his house in Anamnagar, Kathmandu on Monday evening. He was fighting lungs cancer since long time.
Dr. Harihar Dev Pant holds a PhD in Economics.

He has been a Micro finance Practitioner for the last 18 years. He is considered a pioneer of the microfinance sector in Nepal, having introduced the Grameen Bank Financial System in Nepal through Nirdhan and Grameen Bikas Banks. Presently he is the Chairman and Chief Exectuive Officer of Nirdhan Utthan Bank Ltd., the biggest microfinance bank in Nepal. He was the first Chairman of the first two Grameen Bikas Banks in Nepal, Purbanchal Grameen Bikas Bank and Sudur Paschimanchal Grameen Bikas Bank. Before entering into the micro finance arena, Dr. Pant worked for 26 years in the Research, Banking Regulation, and Supervision Departments of Nepal Rastra Bank, and resigned as Deputy Governor in 1995. He has also worked as a member of the Board of Directors of Nepal Bank Ltd., Rastriya Banijya Bank, Nabil Bank and Agriculture Development Bank. From 1991 to 1993

Mr. Panta also worked as a Research Advisor to the Central Bank of Gambia, in East Africa, under the International Monetary Fund technical assistance program.
